Curious what kind of internet you need for day trading?
This is a question that I get quite often from people that want to day trade and travel around the world. When I first left the United States to travel that is also one of the primary things that I was worried about. The first place I went was Toronto, Canada, assuming that I would start in a place where the internet speeds for trading would be good enough. From there I began to travel to different cities in the country and test out the process.
One thing to understand about internet speeds for trading is that there is both an upload and download component. Those two internet speeds work in tandem when it comes to day trading.
The download internet speed affects day trading since we need to be able to connect to the exchanges in order to see the markets. We need our trading platforms to connect and show the data in order to actually put in orders.
The upload internet speed affects day trading because we need to send our orders to the exchange. Most of us have very low upload internet speeds because the majority of users don't use as much upload as they do download. When we put in our order we send the order (price, quantity, etc) to the exchange.
The minimum internet speeds required for day trading is 1 MB Download and .50 MB Upload. I was able to test the slowest internet I had in years in the city if Buenos Aires, Argentina. This is the bare bones minimum when it comes to have good internet to be able to day trade.
One of the most important things to know about the internet required for day trading is that while the speed is crucial, the reliability is more imperative. We can have a slow internet connection but we cannot have an internet connection that cuts out. A solid reliable connection is something that you cannot go without.
